Transition Year at SHS Westport
Transition Year is a one year programme between Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle. It supports students’ personal, social, educational and vocational development while encouraging them to become more independent, responsible and actively involved in their own learning.
The programme provides a bridge from the more structured learning environment of Junior Cycle to the greater independence and personal responsibility required at Senior Cycle. Through classroom learning, project work, work experience, workshops, trips and community involvement, students have opportunities to explore new interests, develop practical skills and build confidence.

- Educational day trips
- TY musical production
- Music, drama and dance
- Disability awareness workshops
- TY Law Programme
- Gaisce – The President’s Award
- Driving education or lessons
- Team-building activities and an overnight adventure journey
- Society of St Vincent de Paul projects
- Junk Kouture
- An international educational tour
- Arts Week
Transition Year encourages students to try new experiences, discover their strengths and develop the skills needed for Senior Cycle and life beyond school.
